When the sum exceeds 10, we “carry” the excess to the next higher place value. For example, in adding 457 + 6, we first add 7 + 6 to get 13. Here, we carry the “1” over to the tens place and write down the “3”. The final answer is 463.

However, with three-digit numbers, the “carry-over” can slow down the mental calculation. And this is where our magic trick comes in!
