“The Motormouth & The Penman“, the exciting printable math game for 5th graders!
Do you want to help your students practice decimal expression in a fun and engaging way? Look no further. This game is aligned with Common Core State Standard 5.NBT.A.3a and is perfect for a minimum of 2 pairs of students.
To start, each pair’s representative will draw a card to determine the order of play. The pair with the highest card goes first, followed by the second highest and so on. Once the order is determined, each pair must decide who will be the “Motormouth” and who will be the “Penman”.
The Motormouth will draw 6 cards and line them up, but the Penman cannot see them. The Motormouth will then roll a die to determine the position of the decimal point. Starting from the rightmost card, the Motormouth will move the decimal point to the left based on the die roll.
For example, if the Motormouth draws the cards 5, 2, 5, 2, 5, and 4 and rolls a 3, the number would be written as 525.254. The Motormouth must then express this decimal to the Penman by saying the number in words, such as “five hundred twenty-five and two hundred fifty-four thousandths”. The Penman must then write the number on the score sheet. If the answer is correct, the pair will earn 2 points. Opponents must verify if the answer is correct.
The game continues in alternating turns until one pair reaches a total of 12 points, at which point they are declared the winners. In case the deck runs out of cards, they can be collected and reshuffled to continue the game.
As you can see, “The Motormouth & The Penman” is a fun and interactive way to help your 5th graders practice decimal expression. Simply print and play.
