Making Math Fun: Fraction Contraptions – An Epic Game to Teach Equivalent Fractions

As teachers, we are always on the hunt for engaging and fun ways to teach challenging concepts. Today, I’ll be sharing an incredible, classroom-tested activity I call “Fraction Contraptions”. This interactive game is aimed at 3rd-5th graders and is focused on the integral concept of equivalent fractions. Let’s dive in and discover the exciting world of Fraction Contraptions!
Understanding the Fraction Contraptions Game
Fraction Contraptions is more than just a game; it’s an engaging, hands-on method to teach your students about equivalent fractions. It offers the opportunity to explore fractions in a fun and competitive atmosphere, fostering a love for math while building crucial skills.
The objective of the game is simple but effective: students will identify and create equivalent fractions.
Fraction Contraptions: Game Set-up

- Materials Needed: The beauty of Fraction Contraptions lies in its simplicity. All you need are the Fraction Contraption game mats, game pieces, a paper clip, and a pencil for each pair of students.
- Preparation: Divide your class into pairs. Each pair should receive a game mat and set of game pieces, which they will need to cut out before starting the game.
- How to Use the Spinner: To spin, the students hold the pencil in the center with one hand, and spin the paper clip with the other. The paper clip should be slid onto the pencil, held upright with the pencil tip in the center of the spinner. Flick the paper clip to make it spin around the pencil.
Now that we’ve covered the set-up, let’s move on to the gameplay!
Fraction Contraptions: Gameplay Instructions

- Starting the Game: Students take turns spinning the paper clip to select a fraction. Have Player 1 spin the spinner and look at the fractions on their mat.
- Filling the Mat: If they can use the fraction they’ve spun to fill in a space on any circle on the right side of their mat, they can place that fraction piece on their mat. If they spin a “Pick Any,” they have the flexibility to choose any fraction piece.
- Building Equivalent Fractions: When students have built a fraction on the right that is equal to one on the left, they can write the numerator of that fraction on their mat.
- Winning the Game: The game continues until one player fills in all three numerators on their mat. Celebrate these little victories to encourage engagement and friendly competition.
Fraction Contraptions: Accommodations, Modifications, and Gameplay Scenarios

In line with providing an inclusive education, Fraction Contraptions can be modified to suit different learners’ needs.
For students struggling with the concept of equivalent fractions, allow them to use fraction strips or other visual aids to help find equivalent fractions. For advanced learners, challenge them to find more than one set of equivalent fractions.
Consider an illustrative scenario: Player 1 spins and lands on 1/2. They scan their game mat and notice that they can use 1/2 to create an equivalent fraction for 2/4 on their mat. Player 1 places the 1/2 piece on their mat, and it’s now Player 2’s turn. This practical visualization not only strengthens the comprehension of equivalent fractions but also boosts their confidence in problem-solving.
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Alignment
Fraction Contraptions is aligned with the Common Core State Standards, specifically:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.3: Explain equivalence of fractions and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.A.1: Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models.
Fraction Contraptions helps students build an understanding of fractions and equivalence that can create a solid foundation for more complex mathematical concepts.
Teaching Equivalent Fractions Can Be Fun
As math educators, we understand that teaching the concept of equivalent fractions can be challenging. But with Fraction Contraptions, you can turn this complex topic into an exciting, interactive activity that your students will love.
The game encourages cooperation, strategic thinking, and the application of the concept in an engaging and meaningful way. Most importantly, it instills a passion for learning math that will last far beyond the classroom.
So, let’s bring our fractions to life with Fraction Contraptions and inspire our students to love learning math! Remember: Math is not just about numbers. It’s about understanding, it’s about creativity, and it’s about having fun while learning.
