Fast Multiplication Facts

Do the students in your class need review of their basic multiplication facts? You may not think of multiplication facts as mental math, but each time a student is asked for a fact, he or she has to go through the following steps: 1) What fact is my teacher asking for? 2) Do I remember that fact? 3) Student pauses for a ½ second. 4) The answer to that multiplication fact is ______. I think I know the answer (and I didn’t have to use a calculator or count with my fingers or toes!) 5) Teacher, the answer to 6 x 8 = 48. I got it right! This fun game will give kids another way to practice their facts and make their ability to provide the answers to multiplication facts more automatically. Divide your class into teams of three and give each team a deck of cards with the face cards removed. Give each team a number to use as a factor. They will keep that factor until they go through their entire stack of cards. Let’s say you give the first team the factor 7 to work with. Two players will play against each other and the third member of the team will keep a record so that everything is fair and square! Player 1 turns over the 6 of diamonds. He or she multiplies 6 times the constant factor of 7 and gets the answer 42. Player 2 turns over the 9 of hearts. He or she multiples 9 times the constant factor of 7 and gets the answer 63. Since Player 2 had the largest product, he or she collects all four cards for that round. In the event of a draw, which would happen if the players turned over the same number in different suits, they simply choose again. Whoever wins that round takes all 8 cards. The rounds continue in this fashion until all the cards in the deck are used. The player in each team who collects the most cards wins.
10 more, 10 less, 100 more, 100 less

As adults we forget that just quickly finding the answer for 10 more or 10 less than a specific number can be a feat of mental gymnastics for children. For your first or second grade class this is a great way to get their mental juices going.
Write a number at the board and let them give you the number that is 10 more. Then have them provide the number that is 10 less than the original number. After they’ve practiced this a number of times, it’s time to bring the numbers up to three digits and for each number have them come up with 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, 100 less of the number you begin with.
Also, giving them the number by speaking it will be much more difficult for them than seeing the written number. If you say “Three hundred fifty-seven,” they need to translate it to 357 in numbers before they can begin their process of mental math. Even more mental agility will be required if you say the number and instead of having them speak their answers, have them write their answers on a worksheet. They should find their answers using mental math– no fingers or calculators!
If you supply a worksheet, have students do this once a week as a warm-up and keep making the time shorter and shorter. As long as you keep it for fun and not for testing, they’ll enjoy being timed and doing it as fast as possible!
Grocery Money

It’s time to use rounding and mental math at the grocery store. Tell each student that they have $100 to spend. You’re now going to tell them exactly what they are spending as you “walk” aisle by aisle in the grocery store.
First they buy bananas at $3.70 for 5 pounds. They buy 10 pounds for their pet monkey.
Next they buy 5 pounds of steak for $9.95 per pound.
Next they buy a whole turkey for $1.55 per pound. The turkey weighs 20 pounds.
$3.70 (round to $4.00 per 5 lbs) so they have spent $8 for 10 pounds
$9.95 (round to $10 per pound for 5 lbs) so far $50 spent plus $8 from before, $58 spent in total
$1.55 (round to $2 per pound for 20 lbs) so the turkey costs $40, plus $58 already spent comes to $98
You can adjust the difficulty of this exercise by the types of items you tell the students they are buying.
Another way to extend this exercise is to offer the students items with purchase prices and have them come up with a grocery list for what they can buy. The student who comes up with a grocery list that’s as close as possible to $100 without going over $100 wins.
